Fairintosh Center is located on the north side of Interstate 40 in Statesville, North Carolina. Fairintosh is between exits 150 and 151. The building is a two story building. The exterior of the bottom floor is stone from Grandfather Mountain. The exterior of the top floor is marine plywood painted gray.
There is a reason for wanting to name the building. Until 1998, all the previous tenants wanted their company name on the building. This included us at Pro-Tech, Inc. The building is highly visible from the Interstate and it is lighted at night. When the signs were removed, there was a mess of adhesives left on the building. To avoid this mess, the building had to be named, and FAIRINTOSH CENTER was chosen.
The name needed to be distinctive and unusual. Jim Sutton lived on a farm in Durham County for about two years. The name of the farm is Fairntosh. It is a lovely place. This is where Jim first raised chickens. He was eight years old and had as many as 200 chickens at the time. Jim's love for the name, Fairntosh, made him want something similar. A search in many reference books as well as the Internet reveals no other FAIRINTOSH. So FAIRINTOSH CENTER was chosen.
Research of the name, "FAIR IN TOSH" reveals the following: 'TOSH', according to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, means 'sheer nonsense'. Then FAIRINTOSH could be interpreted as "Fair in Sheer Nonsense". Could this name be appropriate? This is an educated, high-tech facility, but there is some nonsense at times. There are no windows downstairs. So we consider every day the weather is FAIR.
At the present time the upper level is for Rent. Pro-Tech, Inc. occupies the lower level.
FAIRINTOSH CENTER is an attractive place. The Statesville Community Appearance Commission gave their award to FAIRINTOSH CENTER on December 17th, 1998. They almost took the award away when they walked into Jim's office. Just a last minute scare. We are grateful to have this award.
